This poster features an original painting from Sara Berman's exhibition, Entanglements, a major body of new work made in response to Michael Grandage's production of Britten's Billy Budd. The exhibition is on display in our Art Gallery throughout the Festival season.
The exhibition marks the first time a visual artist has been given behind-the-scenes access to a production’s original costumes and props. Known for her detailed figurative works exploring clothing, identity and performance, Berman worked directly with costumes from the opera, wearing and photographing them in her studio before creating the final artworks. Rope appears as a recurring motif in the opera's set designs and in Berman's works, reflecting the the opera's central tensions of power, rigour and humanity: 'There are rules on the ship, and knots are rules-based. The opera is about trying to keep safe and trying to break free.’
Sara Berman (b.1975) trained in fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art. She established an eponymous fashion label in the 1990s and worked as a consultant for numerous high-profile brands. In 2016, she graduated with a Masters in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art and established a full time career as an artist.
Berman has exhibited work internationally in London, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Milan, Miami, New York, Palm Beach, Tel Aviv, Stockholm and Rotterdam. Entanglements mark her first collaboration with an opera house.
