In response to Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Rana Begum depicts two contrasting colours in juxtaposition with one another, reducing its protagonists, or its themes of love and death, to geometric abstractions. This minimal approach strips back the dramatic story to its core; a romantic tragedy. Interested in geometry, colour and light, Begum explores urban architecture and traditional Islamic art to create spatial and visual experiences.

Rana Begum (b. 1977) lives and works in London, UK. Begum's work has been internationally exhibited at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, London, UK; Tate St Ives, Cornwall; Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich; Dhaka Art Summit, BD; Delfina Foundation, London; Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, UK; Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK; The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, US; Frieze Sculpture Park, London, UK; Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK; Gemeente Museum, Den Haag, NL; Museum Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, AT; Long Museum, Shanghai, CN.
