Pablo Bronstein’s poster for Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte takes the form of 19th-century illustrated alphabets, in this case a large Z. He moves away from traditional motifs – such as Papageno, the Queen of the Night, or the birdcage – and instead depicts the opera’s settings: the Kingdom of Night and the Kingdom of the Temple of Wisdom. It is rare for Bronstein to not involve architectural elements in his work, which often presents imaginary spaces in the style of grand 18th-century building designs.
