When Bellini’s last opera I Puritani was performed at Glyndebourne in 1960, it was its first outing in Britain since 1887 and featured Joan Sutherland as Elvira. Conducted by Vittorio Gui whose enthusiasm for Bellini was behind the opera’s re-introduction in the UK.
