Dark Woods of England presents a visionary world. On the right we see four figures staring out into the dusk and on the left, a lone woman guiding her family deep into the impenetrable woodland. Below their feet is a carpet of fallen trees and above, branches that radiate beyond the edge of the painting. Is this a representation of Mother Earth that we see in a Missoni skirt? Hammick's works are uncanny and dreamlike, but they also speak to current issues facing our world. The figures wear Extinction Rebellion t-shirts and appear to enter the woods not in fear, but in search of a kinship with nature. They seek refuge and harmony in this threatened landscape. In conversation, Hammick says the work is about, ‘where we are right now, a painting of deep connection to this gorgeous planet that we are spinning around on’. Perhaps we have all at some point felt the urge to stand amidst nature and to find solace in the wildest places we can.
