The exhibition is on display in our Art Gallery throughout the Festival season.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"gmail_default\"\u003eThe exhibition marks the first time a visual artist has been given behind-the-scenes access to a production’s original costumes and props. Known for her detailed figurative works exploring clothing, identity and performance, Berman worked directly with costumes from the opera, wearing and photographing them in her studio before creating the final artworks. Rope appears as a recurring motif in the opera's set designs and in Berman's works, reflecting the the opera's central tensions of power, rigour and humanity: 'There are rules on the ship, and knots are rules-based. The opera is about trying to keep safe and trying to break free.’\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"gmail_default\"\u003eSara Berman (b.1975) trained in fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art. She established an eponymous fashion label in the 1990s and worked as a consultant for numerous high-profile brands.
