It has been a central motif in Berman's work over the past decade, functioning as a way to construct and destabilise gender, identity, whilst interrogating ideas of revelation and concealment. In the context of Berman's response to \u003cem\u003eBilly Budd\u003c\/em\u003e, where rank, uniform and discipline structure both appearance and behaviour, these ideas take on a particular resonance. Dress, gesture and gaze - central to both performance and Berman's work - are used to negotiate the boundaries between private and public selves, the fictional and real.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis bow tie features an original painting from Sara Berman's exhibition, \u003cem\u003eEntanglements\u003c\/em\u003e, a major body of new work made in response to Michael Grandage's production of Britten's \u003ci\u003eBilly Budd\u003c\/i\u003e. The exhibition was on display in our Art Gallery throughout the 2026 Glyndebourne Festival season.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"gmail_default\"\u003eSara Berman (b.1975) trained in fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art. She established an eponymous fashion label in the 1990s and worked as a consultant for numerous high-profile brands.
