This Don Giovanni necklace is made from recycled sterling silver and is modelled by Venera Gimadieva who sings the part of Donna Anna at Glyndebourne's Festival 2023 performance of Don Giovanni.
The maker, Neil McLaren, explains that the character of Don Giovanni is represented by a shard of oxidised and textured silver. The necklace depicts him hovering over the entrance to hell, watched by the three women protagonists, Donna Anna, Donna Elvira and Zerlina. Reflecting upon the personalities and circumstances of these very different women, Neil chose to set three ethically sourced semi-precious stones to portray them: labradorite creates a shield for auras and protects Donna Anna against anxiety and negativity; amethyst knows how to balance, soothe, and return Donna Elvira to her spiritual centre; pink moonstone activates the creative and intuitive power of feminine energy, helping Zerlina connect with her true feelings.
Recycled Sterling Silver - hallmarked at the London Assay Office (including a commemorative stamp to mark Charles III’s coronation).
Neil McLaren has been commissioned to design and make a set of unique jewellery pieces inspired by the six opera's on stage at Glyndebourne Festival 2023 and the commission includes necklaces, earrings, bracelets and cufflinks. The stories of the operas, as well as the stage designs, will influence Neil's unique creations.
As well as contemporary jewellery designer, Neil is also a musician and first played the flute at Glyndebourne in 1989 with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, in performances of The Marriage of Figaro.
