Julian Sutherland-Beatson (b.1955) is a Sussex based painter, who paints the landscape, coastline and urban areas in a style recently described as 'contemporary realism'. He studied illustration and printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art under master printmaker Robert Tavener, before embarking on a career in graphic design and illustration. In 2008, Sutherland-Beatson began a year-long project, Sussex 365 (A Year in the Life), documenting Sussex landscapes, which culminated in an exhibition at Glyndebourne in 2010. He returned in 2011 to create a daily paintings throughout the Glyndebourne Festival season, reflecting on the changes to weather, flora, buildings and audience members. The following year, Sutherland-Beatson focused on behind-the-scenes paintings, portraying performers, costume makers, rehearsals and performances. He is currently working on an ongoing project, At Home and Abroad, comprising paintings of the countryside and coastlines across the UK and further afield. Sutherland-Beatson has exhibited widely, with works in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2012, 2013 and 2016 and paintings held in the permanent collection at the House of Lords.
