Mozart at Glyndebourne

Since its very beginnings Glyndebourne has had a strong connection to Mozart. His operas were the first we ever staged here, and almost every Festival since has featured at least one of his operas.

It may come as a surprise to learn that our founder John Christie’s first love was Wagner - he initially conceived and built the opera house with staging Wagner in mind. However, given the size and scale of Wagner’s operas, it was never entirely feasible to stage them in Glyndebourne’s intimate auditorium. During the 1920s, after numerous visits to Salzburg and Munich, Christie became won over by the delights of Mozart, and it was Mozart’s repertoire that went on to form the backbone of the Festival.

Our first ever production in 1934 was Le nozze di Figaro, which was joined by Così fan tutte in the same season. Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Die Zauberflöte, were added the bill in 1935, with Don Giovanni joining in 1936.

Since then we have staged a host of Mozart operas, and our Mozart productions remain a firm favourite with the Festival audience.
