About The Artist

David Hockney

David Hockney, OM, CH, RA (born 9 July 1937) is a British painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. As an important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. Over the years, Hockney has experimented with various different media - painting, drawing, printmaking, watercolours and photography, also creating works using a fax machine, paper pulp, and computer and iPad drawing programmes. His subject matter ranges from still lifes to landscapes, portraits of friends, his dogs, and stage designs for the Royal Court Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and Glyndebourne.

The 1995 Glyndebourne Festival Opera poster designed by David Hockney.

Created from a photograph taken by the artist in his studio with additions in correction fluid and ink, Hockney also used this design for the 1995 programme cover. The titles, also by Hockney, are in his instantly recognisable handwriting.

Hockney has created five Glyndebourne programme covers, starting with the 1975 programme that celebrates his 1975 set and costume designs for The Rake’s Progress.
