About The Artist

Jane Bown

Jane Bown CBE was a significant 20th-century English photographer, who worked for The Observer newspaper from 1949. Her portraits received widespread critical acclaim, and explored quintessential Britain and its defining cultural figures. With an unobtrusive style, she primarily photographed in evocative black and white, and often used only the available natural light. She also took Queen Elizabeth II's eightieth birthday portrait.

Released to celebrate Glyndebourne’s 75th anniversary in 2009.
