About The Artist

David Hockney

David Hockney, OM, CH, RA (b.1937) is a British painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. Rising to prominence in the 1960s Hockney has been deemed one of the most influential artists of the 20th century by the British Royal Academy of Arts. Hockney was a notable contributor to the pop art movement in Britain both in its foundation and growth. Over the years, Hockney has experimented with various different media - painting, drawing, printmaking, watercolours and photography, also creating works using a fax machine, paper pulp, and computer and iPad drawing programmes. His subject matter ranges from still lifes to landscapes, portraits of friends, his dogs, and stage designs for the Royal Court Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and Glyndebourne.

Celebrates the original David Hockney designs from the 1975 Glyndebourne production of The Rake's Progress.

Inspired by an original recording conducted by Igor Stravinsky and William Hogarth's series of eight paintings and engravings of the same name, Hockney began designing the set and costumes for the Glyndebourne production of The Rake's Progress. Through his designs and the use of his now iconic cross-hatched etchings, he wanted to create a 20th century response to the opera and to Hogarth's 18th century idea.
