Christopher Gilvan-Cartwright (b.1966) is a painter and performance artist. He is the first artist to undertake Glyndebourne’s first Artist in Residence programme. Gilvan-Cartwright was born in Dorking, England and now splits his time between his home in Glynde and Turps Studio in London. He studied painting at Central Saint Martins and the Academy of Fine Art in Krakow under Prof. Nowosielski before undertaking an MA in Fine Art at the University of Brighton. In 1997, he won the Royal Oversees League travel scholarship to spend time painting in India and Nepal. On his return, Gilvan-Cartwright was commissioned to design the BBC Proms logos for two seasons. He has also undertaken commissions for publications including The Sunday Times, Independent, Telegraph, Penguin Books and Elle Magazine. Under the name of The Baron, he has performed at the Jerwood Gallery, the Towner Art Gallery, Brighton Festival, Edinburgh Festival and Norwich Arts Centre. Gilvan-Cartwright has presented work in both group and solo shows, with recent exhibitions at Messums Wiltshire, Flowers Gallery, East West Gallery, James Freeman Gallery and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 2019, he was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries.
