Dress For The Occasion
The English countryside is in glorious mid-summer bloom and to match its excellence the thrilling programme of the Gyndebourne Festival 2018 is in full swing. Madama Butterfly, Der Rosenkavalier, Giulio Cesare, Pelléas et Mélisande, Saul and Vanessa take us up to the end of August. This electric explosion of voice, drama, passion and colour will be celebrated and enjoyed by all who visit and, in keeping with Glyndebourne’s tradition, echoed by the guests’ fine attire.
The wearing of formal evening wear during the Glyndebourne Festival originated with founder John Christie’s belief that dressing up is a way for the audience to demonstrate their respect for the performers. To our delight, dressing for the occasion has continued to be embraced by all.
To pay homage to this important aspect of Glyndebourne’s history, and indeed enhance the visitor experience, the Glyndebourne Shop, available both online and on-site, carefully curate and stock seasonal collections of exclusive clothing and accessories for men and women.

Grayson Perry’s unique Opera Season collection includes a bold 100% English silk scarf with hand-rolled hem and a matching pocket handkerchief depicting the vibrant atmosphere of Glyndebourne. Taken from our 2011 Programme Book cover, the design is a Glyndebourne exclusive and will add undeniable flair to any outfit.
To make a high-summer accessory statement we have the Madama Butterfly collection which includes one-off, handmade pieces by London designer Annie Sherburne. Annie’s fabulous works of wearable art are handmade using vintage components that date back to the middle of the 20th century. This stunning Melissa Tree of Life clutch, made with vintage Japanese silk, and backed with black velvet, is beautifully finished with a unique bee jewel and detachable chain strap. To complement this, Annie has designed a stunning range of jewellery including large butterfly brooches made with stones, beads and backs salvaged from World War II factories in, what was then, Czechoslovakia.
The sophisticated Der Rosenkavalier Erté Collection is based on artist and designer Erté’s costume and set designs of Glyndebourne’s 1980s production of Der Rosenkavalier. There is effortless glamour to this stunning selection of clothing and accessories; mix and match or choose one statement piece. The hand-crafted, pure silk Erté Gyndebourne Coat with bracelet length sleeves is made to order by local seamstress Dee Sheehan – formally a cutter for the Glyndebourne costume department. The waistcoat, with an understated buttoned front and show-stopping back, or indeed the glorious coat, can be accessorised with the coordinating silk bow tie, cummerbund and dapper braces. Of course, no dress shirt is complete without some fine cufflinks; our exclusive mother of pearl piano links, designed by Simon Carter, are the perfect complement to this exquisite range.
Also forming part of the Der Rosenkavalier Collection and made exclusively for Glyndebourne, is this statement necklace designed by Reema Pachachi. Made from rose gold vermeil, it cascades with roses, leaves and Elizabethan-era-inspired dress shoes, interspersed with delicate pink and white pearls. Pair with the matching rose and pearl stud drop earrings for a feminine yet striking look.
From the bowler to the boater and the flat cap to the fascinator, the British love of hats is in a league of its own and will be the order of the day during a visit to Glyndebourne Festival. Choose from the classic panama, suitable for a day at the opera or even enjoying a Pimms in the garden; with a fine weave and a black band this hat has already been a best seller this season and is an essential investment for the discerning gentleman. With its roots firmly planted in the 1960s, the earthy tones of the wide brim Diane hat will provide ladies with shade whilst looking effortlessly stylish.
Glyndebourne will forever be synonymous with not just opera; but style and elegance. These elements are beautifully brought together with our exclusive and classic collections. We look forward to seeing you in your finery soon.
