About The Artist

Tom Hammick

Tom Hammick (b.1963) is a British printmaker and painter. Hailed as a ‘visionary artist’, Hammick’s works are informed by a reverence for nature, music, poetry, cinema and myth, woven together with personal memory. Hammick studied Art History at the University of Manchester and later Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Art and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Canada. He has an MA in Printmaking, also from Camberwell and taught Fine Art Painting and Printmaking at the University of Brighton for many years. He now splits his time between his painting studio in East Sussex and his busy print studio in Bermondsey, south-east London. Hammick was the recipient of the V&A Prize at the International Print Biennale in 2016 and his works are held in many major public and private collections, including the British Museum, Victoriana and Albert Museum, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Deutsche Bank, Yale Center for British Art and Library of Congress, Washington, DC. He is currently represented by Lyndsey Ingram and in 2020, collaborated with designer Paul Smith on a range of colourful accessories and limited edition prints for their flagship Mayfair store. Tom Hammick is Glyndebourne's Associate Artist for 2020-2022.

Dark Woods of England presents a visionary world. On the right we see four figures staring out into the dusk and on the left, a lone woman guiding her family deep into the impenetrable woodland. Below their feet is a carpet of fallen trees and above, branches that radiate beyond the edge of the painting. Is this a representation of Mother Earth that we see in a Missoni skirt? Hammick's works are uncanny and dreamlike, but they also speak to current issues facing our world. The figures wear Extinction Rebellion t-shirts and appear to enter the woods not in fear, but in search of a kinship with nature. They seek refuge and harmony in this threatened landscape. In conversation, Hammick says the work is about, ‘where we are right now, a painting of deep connection to this gorgeous planet that we are spinning around on’. Perhaps we have all at some point felt the urge to stand amidst nature and to find solace in the wildest places we can.
